Worlds fastest GPU RAM developed :: Posted by Brodieman

Samsung have brought out a 512MB DDR3 videocard memory unit, doubling the capacity of current cards. Samsung actually hold a large proportion of the high end videocards memory units, and also developed the 256MB DDR3 late last year. So for gaming we're heading to 512MB onboard videocard memory. Seeing that we as of yet are yet to really utilise even 128MB at capacity, i'm not sure if we are going to even require such large amounts for sometime yet. Still it's a nice problem to have. Hopefully a flaw free product. Still if it's flawed we've got 300,000 Japanese Beta testers ready to thrash out all the problems ;)
Duel DVD/HD-DVD discs created :: Posted by Brodieman
December 08, 2004 - 07:37 AM
In a bid to open the DVD market which was looking to be claimed by DVD Blu-Ray (Machines using blue lasers - which are able to be focussed better and to smaller sizes than traditional red lasers), Toshiba and Memory-Tech (the duel developers of the format) are to release discs which support both HD-DVD and traditonal DVD on the same disc. Obviously this allows them to be distributed with regular DVD discs improving the capture market for HD-DVD. More info over here.

In a crackdown on criminals, Valve has suspended the accounts of 20,000 users who have tried to register accounts for stolen and cracker versions of the game as well as those using fraudulent/stolen credit card details. In particular this little gem stands out as a great example

As i'm sure the entire planet is aware, Half Life 2, has been active since the 16/11 now and is hopefully shortly due it's first patch - one that deals with the stuttering issues many are receiving in game. Steam seemed to take it relatively smoothly in the end with only some very short suspensions of service. Not the first company to release games via the internet but certainly the one with the largest volume. Well done Valve.
Intel/Microsoft future add campaign :: Posted by Brodieman
November 04, 2004 - 03:53 PM
In perhaps the most cynical Christmas marketing exercise i have seen for sometime in the computer industry, Microsoft and Intel are set to fire up thier "Digital Joy" campaign to bring the message that the PC is the entertainment device to have. The cynical part comes in when you realise that they'll be heavily pushing MS/Intel products - OMG!?!? what a amazing coincidence! More at Techweb

November 04, 2004 - 03:49 PM
It seems that SCC a hacker group are offering Cisco sourcecode for sale presumably to anyone who has the money, but i imagine targeted to other hacker groups. Cisco are downplaying the theft saying that the sourcecode will not make users more at risk. More here
Microsoft and Linux at it again. :: Posted by Brodieman

In the eternal feud between who has the best OS, Microsoft CEO recently sent this letter out to consumers. Has had a few salvos launched back and things seem to be heating up again after a decided lull in the past few months. When will they learn that OS perfection was obtained by the Commodore Basic system?
Well it's not really a crackdown but it sounds cool so i'll use it - cybercrime crackdown. Anyway, ;) ,a group of E-Thugs have been busted by the US Secret Service for identity theft, conspiracy and various fraud charges. It is the first breakthrough for Operation Firewall - a multinational effort to crackdown on credit card fraud.
On a completely unrelated note, the Extreme Reviews team have currently suspended our trade in livestock, cheap motherboard knock-off's of cheap Chinese motherboard knock-offs and a healthly trade in tin foil hat making until, like true overclockers, the heat dies down (and we can start up again). ;)
Instant Message spam cops a lawsuit :: Posted by Brodieman
October 30, 2004 - 09:48 AM
In the fine tradition of suing everybody for everything in sight AOL (Time Warner) have sued 20 peeps in the quest to get rid of instant messaging spam (SPIM). Now you could argue that AOL spawned instant messaging spamming but that could cop me a lawsuit so i won't. The only concern i have now is who is going to tell me that my computer is at risk?!
Some are speculating that some skeletons found recently are of another species, a dwarf like people. Until they find a Dwarven Battleaxe +3, Mitrhil Arm and a Bag of Holding though i'm not getting too excited. Or they find a UFO buried next to them. What's this got to do with computers and technology you ask? Well some speculate they are the only people on earth not to recieve any hype about Half Life 2.
I haven't done one in yonks but recently the Cassini-Huygens probe started sending back some amazing pictures of titan's surface and atmosphere. More info here
A new worm is set to start getting around quickly very soon. Known as the Bagle worm (a standard mass mailer worm) it looks set to reach the levels MyDoom set earlier on this year. Check your anti-virus vendors for new updates/removal tools.
